FOREX currencies are traded in much smaller divisions than cash. Whereas the smallest division in US cash is the penny ($0.01), US currency can be traded on the FOREX in divisions of $0.0001. This smallest division is called the pip (short for Price Interest Point – sometimes just called 'points').

Various currencies have different sized pips. The US dollar is expressed in pips of 0.0001 while the Japanese yen is expressed in pips of 0.01. The value of a pip depends on the size of a lot and the currency pair traded. Currency pairs with USD as the quote (second) currency (e.g. CAD/USD) always have a pip value of $10 per standard lot or $1 per mini lot. A trader has at his disposal different types of orders to make FOREX trades. A clear understanding of each type of order is necessary to be a successful FOREX trader.

Market Order – is an order to buy or sell at the current market price. They can be used to enter or exit a trade.

Market orders should be used with care because in fast-moving markets there may be a difference between the price seen at the time a market order is given and the actual price of the transaction. This is due to slippage – the amount the market moves in the few seconds between giving an order and having it executed. Slippage could result in a loss or gain of several pips.

Limit Order – is an order to buy or sell at a certain limit. They can be used to buy currency below the market price or sell currency above the market price. When buying, your order is executed when the market falls to your limit order price. When selling, your order is executed when the market rises to your limit order price. There is no slippage with limit orders.

Stop Order – is an order to buy above the market or to sell below the market. They are most commonly used as stop-loss orders to limit losses if the market moves contrary to what the trader expected. A stop-loss order will sell the currency if the market falls below the point set by the trader.

One Cancels the Other (OCO) – this order is used when placing a limit order and a stop-loss order at the same time. If either order is executed the other is cancelled, allowing the trader to make a transaction without monitoring the market. If the market falls, the stop-loss order will be executed, but if the market rises to the level of the limit order, the currency will be sold at a profit.

Investment banks are secretly profiting from emergency European Central Bank funding by acting as brokers to funnel billions of euros of much needed liquidity to Britain's banks and building societies. In theory the market is not in fact open 24 hours a day and each trading center will have its own set operating hours. Trading for example starts in Sydney and is followed by trading in Tokyo, London and New York. Because of global time differences however you will find that there is a trading center somewhere in the world which is open at any time of the day or night, seven days a week, and since traders have access to all of these trading centers you can effectively trade around the clock.

As an example, the time is just coming up to eleven o'clock on a Friday morning in Thailand as I write this article, so where can I trade at the moment. Well, the markets in Europe and North America are currently closed, but I could trade if I wished to do so through Sydney or Tokyo. However, if I decide to spend the afternoon on the beach (which is entirely possible) and then to trade later in the day then the markets here in the Far East would be closed but I could trade first through London or Paris and later through New York.

Dollar Rises vs Pound

The dollar was mostly lower Monday, but gained versus the pound in light holiday-week trading.
The 15-nation euro inched up to $1.4091 in late New York trading from $1.4067 late Friday. The British pound, meanwhile, dipped to $1.4555 from $1.4677 late Friday as it circled parity with the euro. The pound hit its most recent record low of 1.0198 euros Monday.

During the Tokyo session, the Euro only trades 15% of all volume so it is best to start watching the Euro late in the Tokyo session. It trades 39% of all Forex volume during the London session. It can also be traded during the New York session.

GBP/USD
The pound trades extremely lightly during the Tokyo session. Start watching it near the end of the Tokyo session as it can start moving then. In the London session, GBP/USD accounts for approximately 23% of all Forex trading volume. The pound can be traded in the New York session also.

The Foreign Exchange market, also referred to as the "Forex" or "FX" market is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily average turnover of well over US$1 trillion -- 30 times larger than the combined volume of all U.S. equity markets.

There are two reasons to buy and sell currencies. About 5% of daily turnover is from companies and governments that buy or sell products and services in a foreign country or must convert profits made in foreign currencies into their domestic currency. Reading a foreign exchange quote may seem a bit confusing at first. However, it's really quite simple if you remember two things: 1) The first currency listed first is the base currency and 2) the value of the base currency is always 1.

The US dollar is the centerpiece of the Forex market and is normally considered the 'base' currency for quotes. In the "Majors", this includes USD/JPY, USD/CHF and USD/CAD. For these currencies and many others, quotes are expressed as a unit of $1 USD per the second currency quoted in the pair. For example, a quote of USD/JPY 120.01 means that one U.S. dollar is equal to 120.01 Japanese yen.

When the U.S. dollar is the base unit and a currency quote goes up, it means the dollar has appreciated in value and the other currency has weakened. If the USD/JPY quote we previously mentioned increases to 123.01, the dollar is stronger because it will now buy more yen than before.

The three exceptions to this rule are the British pound (GBP), the Australian dollar (AUD) and the Euro (EUR). In these cases, you might see a quote such as GBP/USD 1.4366, meaning that one British pound equals 1.4366 U.S. dollars.

In these three currency pairs, where the U.S. dollar is not the base rate, a rising quote means a weakening dollar, as it now takes more U.S. dollars to equal one pound, euro or Australian dollar.

In other words, if a currency quote goes higher, that increases the value of the base currency. A lower quote means the base currency is weakening.Currency pairs that do not involve the U.S. dollar are called cross currencies, but the premise is the same. For example, a quote of EUR/JPY 127.95 signifies that one Euro is equal to 127.95 Japanese yen.

When trading forex you will often see a two-sided quote, consisting of a 'bid' and 'offer'. The 'bid' is the price at which you can sell the base currency (at the same time buying the counter currency). Sterling hit a record low against the euro and a basket of currencies on Monday, stung by an ongoing view that the weak UK economy will require more interest rate cuts.
The euro climbed to 97.98 pence in extremely thin trade, edging closer to parity after figures showed that UK home prices fell in December, taking them nearly 10 percent lower since the start of the credit crunch in August 2007.
As evidence shows the UK economy is falling deeper into recession, the Bank of England is expected to cut rates more, which would keep British borrowing costs below those in the euro zone and make euro zone investments more appealing than UK ones.

"Sterling is continuing to be hit by the belief that rates in the UK still have to fall much more, and underlying fears of a very deep recession in the UK," said Antje Praefcke, currency strategist at CBCM in Frankfurt.
"There's still a gravitational pull toward parity (with the euro) in the thin market," she added.
The euro has soared more than 32 percent against sterling this year -- jumping a record 18 percent so far this month alone -- and its rise on Monday pushed the UK currency down to 74.2 on a trade-weighted basis, its lowest according to daily records kept by the BoE which date back to 1990.

Sterling suffered across the board, slipping 0.1 percent against the dollar to $1.4630. It tumbled 0.8 percent to 131.72 yen, its weakest level against the Japanese currency since 1995.
Market participants said trading volumes were far lower than usual, which was aggravating year-end trade. In such conditions, many said that it was just a matter of time before the euro reaches parity with sterling.
Many analysts said that the pair may reach parity before the new year due to poor liquidity. Still, they said that the euro may be unable to sustain such lofty gains, given it is already overbought against sterling.

UK ECONOMY SUFFERS
Figures on Monday from property consultant Hometrack showed that housing prices in England and Wales fell 8.7 percent in 2008. They fell 0.9 percent in December, showing that prices have now fallen consistently over the last 15 months and 9.3 percent since the credit crisis began.
Adding to gloom about the UK economy were figures from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development at the weekend showing that 600,000 UK jobs could be lost in 2009 due to the recession.
In addition, British children's wear retailer Adams will become the latest UK firm to fall into administration (nLS290132), fuelling speculation that more businesses are poised to fail.
A shrinking UK economy, ongoing deterioration in the housing market and rising unemployment are contributing to an grim outlook in 2009, which has battered sterling across the board.

This has fed the belief that the Bank of England will cut rates further -- and perhaps even explore other options to shore up the economy during in the recession -- even after an aggressive round of cuts has left rates at a five-decade low of 2.0 percent, lower than 2.5 percent in the euro zone.
"There's a sense that UK rates will fall closer to zero, and that the BoE may be forced into some sort of quantitative easing, while there's no sense of that in the euro zone," said Daragh Maher, senior currency strategist at Calyon in London.
He added that the negative view of the UK economy will continue to weigh on the pound, although additional weakness in the euro zone economy may start to chip away at the euro's appeal in the new year.
Higher interest rates in the euro zone have increased the euro's appeal against the pound as it has narrowed the yield spread between euro zone and UK government bonds.

The yield on 10-year UK bonds hovered around 3.121 percent on Monday, near a record low of 3.008 percent hit last week, while the yield on its euro zone counterpart fell to an all-time trough of 2.909 percent.
Both yields have tumbled due to economic deterioration and falling interest rates but the bigger fall in UK yields due to the BoE's particularly aggressive easing has shrunk the yield spread between the two to around 0.109 percent on Monday, the narrowest yield advantage for sterling in a decade.

Bonds, Dollar Hold Steady Light Post-Holiday Trade

With few investors trading and fewer indicators to base trades on, the dollar and government bonds held tight Friday.
Treasurys resumed trade Friday after the market was closed Thursday for the Christmas holiday. Some bond market participants took an extended break, and many foreign investors are off for Boxing Day.
Despite a record auction of $120 billion in bonds earlier in the week, the huge increase in Treasury supply has done little to move bond prices significantly lower or yields higher off their all-time lows.

Private investor and corporate demand for government bonds remains high, as the stock and commodities markets continue the volatility that has persisted throughout the year and especially in the past three months. Looking for a safe alternative, investors have opted to buy up Treasurys with the hope that government bonds will provide a secure investment - if yields are low.
As a result, Treasury bonds have been one of the best performing assets this year, returning 14.3% to investors, according to a Lehman Brothers index. Investors holding S&P 500-based index funds, on the other hand, have lost more than 40% of their investment so far in 2008.
Most economists say dour economic news will continue well into next year, and analysts forecast Treasurys will continue to rise for at least several more months, pushing yields even lower. Yields on the 2-year, 10-year and 30-year Treasurys all hit record lows last week before rising slightly in the past three sessions.

Bond prices: The 10-year note edged up 15/32 to 114 10/32, and its yield fell to 2.16% from 2.14% from Wednesday. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
The 30-year long bond rose 20/32 to 138 22/32, and yielded 2.6%, down from 2.63%.
The 2-year note rose 1/32 to 99 31/32, and its yield dropped to 0.9% from 0.92%.
The yield on the 3-month note rose held steady at 0.015%, though it has been hovering around 0% for two weeks. Yields near the zero mark on short-term bills are an indication that investors are completely risk-averse, prioritizing safety above profit.

Libor rates, which have fallen considerably since the credit crisis' peak in late October, were not tallied Friday due to the bank holiday in the U.K.
Dollar: The U.S. dollar fell very slightly against the euro but rose against the yen and pound as investors digested a barrage of economic data ahead of the holiday.

Analysts said dollar movements were very subtle due to such low trading volume, and do not reflect any trend or economic news. Markets were mostly closed abroad.
The euro edged 0.3% higher against the dollar to trade at $1.4072, from $1.4028 late Wednesday in New York.
The British pound fell 0.2% to $1.4697 from $1.4728.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose 1.5% to ¥90.57 from ¥90.96.

The investor's goal in Forex trading is to profit from foreign currency movements. Forex trading or currency trading is always done in currency pairs. For example, the exchange rate of EUR/USD on Aug 26th, 2003 was 1.0857. This number is also referred to as a "Forex rate" or just "rate" for short. If the investor had bought 1000 euros on that date, he would have paid 1085.70 U.S. dollars. One year later, the Forex rate was 1.2083, which means that the value of the euro (the numerator of the EUR/USD ratio) increased in relation to the U.S. dollar.

The investor could now sell the 1000 euros in order to receive 1208.30 dollars. Therefore, the investor would have USD 122.60 more than what he had started one year earlier. However, to know if the investor made a good investment, one needs to compare this investment option to alternative investments. However, it is estimated that anywhere from 70%-90% of the FX market is speculative. Colombia's national statistics agency says the pace of growth is slowing, with third quarter GDP growth counted at 3.1 percent above the same period a year earlier.

Monday's report shows a mere 0.7 percent rise in gross domestic product between the second and third quarters of the year.

Animal shelters across nation filling up as faltering economy leads owners to give up pets

A growing number of Americans are giving up their dogs and cats to animal shelters as the emotional bonds between people and pets get tested by economic ones.
From the Malvern, Pa., man who turned his two dogs over in order to help pay for his mother's cancer treatments, to the New York woman who euthanized her cat rather than keeping it alive with expensive medications, rising economic anxieties make it increasingly difficult for some pet owners to justify spending $1,000 a year or more on pet food, veterinary services and other costs.
The population growth at animal shelters in Connecticut, Nebraska, Texas, Utah and other states shows how the weak economy is also shrinking the pool of potential adopters. And it coincides with a drop-off in government funding and charitable donations.

The effect has been cramped quarters for dogs and cats, a faster rate of shelters euthanizing animals and some shelters turning away people looking to surrender pets, according to interviews with several shelters and animal advocates. Of the estimated 6 million to 8 million dogs and cats sent to animal shelters every year, half are euthanized and the rest adopted, according to the Humane Society of the United States.
"It's definitely discouraging for us," said Adam Goldfarb, a Humane Society spokesman. "One of our major goals is to develop and celebrate the bond between people and animals. It's so tragic when families reach a point when they can't afford to care for their pets."
With two children, a husband on disability and a difficult job search of her own, 23-year-old Mel Bail of Worcester, Mass., had begun feeding leftovers from family meals to her three cats -- Rory, Ozzy and Mudpie -- before recently deciding to give them up.

"When I couldn't pay my gas bill, I knew I had to find another home for the cats," Bail said.
But it wasn't easy to find a shelter that would accept them. "They're completely full," said Bail, who ultimately turned to online classified ads to find homes for Rory, Ozzy and Mudpie.
There is no nationwide data being collected on the reasons dogs and cats are being abandoned by their owners, but shelter managers and advocates for animals say the trend is undeniable -- and probably a bigger phenomenon than they are aware of.
"People are embarrassed to admit that's why they're giving up their pets," said Betsy McFarland, the Humane Society's director of communications for companion animals.

An Associated Press-Petside.com poll found that one in seven owners nationwide reported reduced spending on their pets during the past year's recession. Of those cutting back, more than a quarter said they have seriously considered giving up their pet.
The average annual cost of owning a dog is about $1,400, while the average annual cost of a cat is about $1,000, according to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association. The survey suggests there are some 231 million pets -- excluding fish -- in more than 71 million homes in America.
In Omaha, Neb., the Nebraska Humane Society's shelter began tracking for the first time this year those pets given up because of financial constraints. Through mid-November, more than 275 pets were given up because their owners said they couldn't afford to keep them.

Among them are two 9-year-old miniature schnauzers, dropped off anonymously with a note that said their owners could no longer afford to keep them.
Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese said the obedience-trained purebreds came into the shelter up-to-date on vaccinations and dental care and were well-groomed.
"It is really sad, because for these people, it is not an excuse. They are absolutely stuck, and they need to downsize and there is no one to take the pets," she said. "You can tell these have been much-loved pets."
In New York, Erin Farrell-Talbot recently made the decision to euthanize her 15-year-old cat, Buki, when she was told within days of losing her job that he would need thousands of dollars in treatment and medications costing $65 a month to live.

US Dollar Plummets as US 10-Year Treasury Yields Hit Record Lows

2. All participants that manages to open at least 20 lots and keep their demo account initial balance will be awarded a Live Account with $100 credit
3. The highest 5 accounts with the highest profits (including the floating P/L) will be awarded a Live Account with $250 credit.

The contest starts on the first Sunday of each month at 10 pm GMT and ends on the last Friday of that month at 10 pm GMT.
